"INFO: The team previously at hannahpad Canada launched their own new brand, illum! These blog posts have been written when we used to run hannahpad Canada. All information is still relevant and everything is the same! We simply changed the brand that we offer. :slightly_smiling_face: "

Zero-Waste Bathroom Alternatives

When we think of rooms in our homes that produce a lot of waste, we probably all think of our kitchens. But have you ever thought how much trash comes from your bathroom? From  illum’s cotton period pads to reusable q-tips, there are a ton of zero-waster bathroom alternatives that you can make the switch to in order to reduce your environmental impact. Keep reading to find out what everyone from influencers to the everyday person if doing to make a zero-waste bathroom.

Biodegradable Dental Floss

In order to maintain healthy teeth and gums, we have to floss. However, flossing also comes a lot of single-use plastic waste. Luckily, there are a few zero-waste flossing alternatives available on the market, including biodegradable dental floss without any annoying plastic packaging.

Bamboo Toothbrush

Each year, billions of disposable plastic toothbrushes end up in landfills and ecosystems around the world, taking thousands of years to break down. Consider switching to a bamboo toothbrush. Their wooden handles are biodegradable, making them a better choice for the environment.

Shampoo & Conditioner Bars

There are many benefits to making the switch from bottled shampoo and conditioner to their bar counterparts. They make travel easy, work better, and reduce our plastic litter. One shampoo bar can last over 50 washes, in comparison to the two medium-sized bottles of shampoo that it would take.

Soap Bar

Just like your hair, there are zero-waste alternatives for your body! One of the easiest swaps you can make in your bathroom is a soap bar, with options that come in minimal, eco-friendly packaging. Just make sure the ingredients of your soap are good for the environment too!

Safety Razor

A safety razor is a great zero-waste bathroom essential for any gender—if you want to shave your body hair that is. If properly taken care of, a stainless steel safety razor can last you a lifetime, each of its parts recyclable, eliminating tons of plastic waste from disposable razors.

Cotton Period Pads

In a single menstruating person’s lifetime, they can use up to 16 THOUSAND disposable pads and tampons. That’s a whole lot of unnecessary waste and just one of many  reasons to make a change. Use reusable organic cotton period pads like illum Cloth Pads instead of disposable menstrual products!

The average major q-tip brand manufactures 25.5 billion q-tips every year? This production of these q-tips in addition to the unstainable cotton they are made from can really take its toll on the environment. There are greener alternatives, whether you opt for reusable q-tips or ones made from paper and organic cotton.

Reusable Facial Rounds

One of the most wasteful bathroom items tends to be cotton balls or small cotton pads. Not only will replacing these disposable products with reusable facial rounds benefit the environment, but it will also save you money as they have long lifespans. Just throw them in the wash when they need to be cleaned!

Natural Deodorant

When it comes to natural deodorant, you have a ton of options to choose from. Sweating is a natural process your body goes through, releasing toxins from your body—which is why antiperspirant is not a great idea for your health or the environment. A deodorant made from natural ingredients works just as well.

Compost Bucket

An easy zero-waste change to make in your bathroom is to use a compost bin instead of a trash can. Most of the trash we produce in the bathroom can actually be composted, such as stray hair, nail clipping, and even tissue. This way, you don’t have to send more biodegradable waste to the landfill.
